TORONTO, November 15, 2022 – Coca-Cola Canada Bottling Limited is sharing an update on its progress in reducing the amount of plastic the company uses in its PET beverage bottles. To date, the company has been able to lessen the amount of virgin plastic it uses by close to 1,800,000 kg in more than 90 per cent of the products it makes, distributes, merchandises, and sells and is now using 11 per cent less virgin plastic across its product packaging. There are continued reductions planned for 2023 and beyond.

With less plastic, the packaging weighs less too, decreasing the amount of fuel and carbon emissions needed throughout the manufacturing and distribution process removing more than 3,900 tonnes of C02, the equivalent of taking 850 cars off the road.

Taking plastic out of its packaging is one of the ways the company is taking action on its Toward a Better Future together environmental sustainability goals. It’s also focused on working to collect a bottle and can for every one produced by 2030, ensuring packaging is recyclable and using more recycled content. And, while it’s making progress on all of its goals, the challenge of reducing plastic in its beverage bottles while also maintaining quality standards, is a constant focus for their packaging design and manufacturing teams, and supplier partners.

We’re working Toward A Better Future Together as we grow our business in a way that manages our environmental impacts and makes our employees, customers and communities proud. Reducing the amount of plastic in our beverage bottles is extremely important to us and, while we recognize we still have work to do, we’re pleased with the progress we’re making,” says Stephen du Toit, president and chief operating officer at Coca-Cola Canada Bottling. “Even removing small amounts of plastic from one of our already low-weight PET beverage bottles can make a difference.”

In addition to the company’s commitment toward plastic reduction, and looking for ways to minimize the amount of plastic packaging it uses, Coca-Cola Canada Bottling has taken other recent actions toward environmental sustainability, including:

  • In partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, shifting all of Sprite and Fresca plastic PET packaging from its signature green colour to clear. When recycled, the clear PET Sprite and Fresca bottles can be remade into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic.
  • Transitioning DASANI to bottles made from 100 per cent recycled PET packaging; and
  • Piloting electric service vehicles in the Greater Montreal Area.
