Dead Meat

By George Guidoni

General swine flu

While Mexico has more than enough serious internal problems on its plate to resolve—high-level corruption, deadly drug-trade wars, the sorry state of its national soccer team, etc.—the level of sacrifice the country has endured to date by virtually shutting down its entire economic and social infrastructure is nothing short of extraordinary.

If anything, our hard-hit NAFTA partner should rightfully expect to be rewarded for its selflessness in helping contain the flu’s spread—not ostracized for having had the misfortune of being its epicenter, as the often-suggested renaming of the virus strain to “Mexican flu” would do.

The fact is that all the effort and energy spent at pointing fingers represents energy and effort spent not addressing the root problem with all the considerable scientific, medicinal and biotechnological resources at our disposal, so if this potential pandemic does in fact take a turn for the worse, the world will have plenty of good reasons to curse itself indeed.
