Waste In Haste

That’s the same recycling system that will not accept biodegradable plastic shopping bags because they would “contaminate the sorting and processing” of all other plastic, according to the city, which seems oddly self-defeatist in the larger sustainability equation.

As for single-use food packaging, ordering foodservice retailers to develop reusable/refillable takeout containers has the city “playing Russian Roulette with the health and safety of Toronto residents,” according to vice-president of the Environment and Plastics Industry Council (EPIC) Cathy Cirko.

“There will be greater risk of food-borne illness as retailers are forced to switch to alternate packaging that is not as effective in preventing food contamination,” says Cirko, joining swelling ranks of other business associations urging the city to come up with a better deal for its businesses and residents alike.

Let’s hope it’s not too much for the City Hall to agree to at least hear them out.
