CPMA launches draft Sustainable Packaging Guide for food and fresh produce
By The Canadian Produce Marketing Association
GeneralIn 2022, the Government of Canada announced support for Canada’s fresh-produce industry to help it transition to more environmentally friendly packaging. Today, the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) is pleased to share the progress of this work by releasing the draft Sustainable Packaging Guide for food and fresh produce (SPG) – available at www.sustainable-packaging.ca.
Building on the success of the CPMA’s Packaging Working Group, and developed in collaboration with produce- and food-industry stakeholders working alongside packaging experts, the SPG was designed to help the industry navigate the complexities of food- and produce-packaging decision making.
Devised to support the packaging novice, practitioner, and expert, the SPG offers action-oriented tools to help identify and assess sustainable packaging options, including:- Packaging self-assessment tool: An interactive assessment tool guiding users to develop a packaging “heatmap”.
- Packaging Guides: Individual packaging categories helping identify “what is possible” in sustainable packaging, including a Use Cases inventory.
- Supporting resources and tools: Curated content helping answer leading sustainable packaging-related questions.
Given early positive industry feedback during development, the draft SPG has been made available to the industry to help shape its packaging decision-making activities – while also providing the opportunity for broader industry feedback on the draft SPG content and layout.spg@cpma.ca. A French version of the site is currently under development and will be available in the fall of 2023.
