Shoppers Drug Mart names CEO

General Dave Williams Domenic Pilla Shoppers Drug Mart

Domenic Pilla takes over as the chief executive officer of Canada's largest pharmacy chain.

Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation, Canada’s largest pharmacy chain has announced the appointment of Domenic Pilla as its chief executive officer, effective November 1, 2011.

“I am delighted to join Shoppers Drug Mart at this time of challenge and reform in health-care and community pharmacy,” says Pilla. “A time of change is also a window of opportunity for the company to continue to lead the industry in providing innovative patient services while driving organizational efficiencies and continued growth in the retail sector.”

But, Pilla knows he has his work cut out for him, as generic drug reform in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and B.C. have nixed professional allowances that generic drug companies paid to pharmacies in exchange for stocking their products. This change, according to pharmacies, has cost them hundreds of millions of dollars a year, with about half of Shopper’s revenues being derived from the sale of prescription drugs.

A graduate from McGill University with a BA degree in chemical engineering, Pilla was most recently president of McKesson Canada, a drug supply, health-care services and technology company since 2006, and was also an executive at RNG Group and at Petro-Canada.

Shoppers chairman Holger Kluge says: “He (Pilla) brings a strong vision, experienced leadership, passion and energy to work with our associate owners and employees in delivering continued best-in-class experiences for all our customers.”

Pilla replaces interim president and chief executive officer Dave Williams, who will aid him during the transfer of leadership.
