Cereplast, Inc. of Hawthorne, CA—a developer of proprietary bio-based sustainable plastics, has launched a new grade of resins, the Cereplast Compostable 5001.

The new resin complements Cereplast’s existing line of compostable resins, Cereplast Compostables, expanding market applications for Cereplast. The 5001 grade is suited to meet the needs of converters, manufactures and brand owners interested in substituting Polystyrene foam with an environmentally sustainable plastic.

Cereplast Compostable 5001 is a compostable foam using Ingeo PLA (a synthetic fiber made from ethanol—corn, sugar, rice—instead of petroleum byproducts) and various biodegradable and compostable components.

Compostables 5001 is suitable for production of:

This material can be used on conventional extrusion equipments with no screw changes or investment for the converters in their process. A foam density of 5-pounds per cubic foot can be achieved using conventional equipment.

Compostables 5001 has higher thermal properties than traditional compostables and is an option for plastic manufactures looking to reduce their dependence on petroleum-based plastics.
