MELBOURNE, Australia – Cosmetics giant L’Oréal Australia is collaborating with Avery Dennison Corporation, an Australian material-science and manufacturing company, and waste-management entity Wasteflex on a liner-recycling program, which aims to eliminate all label waste.

Avery Dennison announced in a press release on Wednesday that the program will be the first one of its kind by the company in the South Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan regions. The initiative involves diverting glassine paper liner, waste from label applications, to production of recycled products – thus keeping it out of landfills. The program is part of Avery Dennison’s sustainability plan to decrease its own product waste.

L’Oréal Australia national logistics manager David O’Leary said in a press statement Wednesday that his company would be able to meet its zero-waste-to-landfill goal with the other two organizations’ assistance.

“The savings from this program have been significant,” O’Leary added.

L’Oréal Australia expects to divert more than six tons of glassine paper liner into the recycled-paper industry through this collaborative initiative, the Dennison release noted.

Anil K. Sharma, Avery Dennison’s vice president and general manager for label and graphic materials, for the South Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa regions, said that his company was “delighted” to partner with L’Oréal and Wasteflex in this program.

“As a materials-science innovator committed to making a meaningful difference, we see sustainability as both a responsibility and an opportunity to lead,” said Sharma in a statement. “With our liner-recycling programme, brands now have a solution that will enable them to reduce the environmental impact from discarded label liner waste.”

Wasteflex chief executive officer Matt Tamplin stated that his organization was “proud” to be a part of the initiative.

“Through this programme, we can offer the industry an exciting new solution that is easy to implement and will improve sustainability and commercial outcomes for business,” said Tamplin.

“As the pioneer of the pressure-sensitive label industry, Avery Dennison has always focused on helping customers and brand owners achieve their goals by delivering label materials that can elevate brands, improve productivity and help products become more sustainable,” said Marcel Cote, Avery Dennison’s strategic marketing director.

“With the launch of our Avery Dennison Liner Recycling Service,” Cote added, “we can offer a sustainable solution to divert glassine paper liner from landfills and into recycled paper products.”

Founded in 1935, Avery Dennison Corporation specializes in designing and producing labeling and functional material for many major sectors.
