“The ultimate aim is for Ice River to use only 100-percent recycled plastic water bottles,” Mielke told Canadian Packaging, estimating that the new recycling infrastructure at the Feversham plant—including a newly-purchased Husky cap molding machine—will help divert up to 7.5 million plastic water bottles from landfills.

“This is a great way for Ice River to demonstrate its long-stated commitment to reducing its carbon footprint in a decisive and meaningful way,” adds Krones, Inc.’s product manager for recycling technology Jon Larson. “The water bottling industry has come in for a lot of criticism in Canada lately from environmental groups and from different levels of government, being a relatively easy and vulnerable target, so this Ice River Springs initiative can go a long way in repairing the industry’s maligned image.

“Essentially, Ice River Springs wants to become a truly ‘carbon neutral’ water-bottling company,” states Larson, “and having these new on-site recycling capabilities will go a long way to helping it achieve that goal.”
