Despite the growth of the SFI program—also covering certification for chain-of-custody, labeling and marketing requirements—only an estimated 10 per cent of the world’s forests are currently SFI-certified, according to SFI, Inc. president Kathy Abusow.

“At a time when just 10 per cent of the world’s forests are independently certified, Rock-Tenn has taken a leadership role by supporting global efforts to improve forest practices,” Abusow states.

“Demand for products from responsibly-managed forests is increasing worldwide and Rock-Tenn joins a growing number of companies that are demonstrating their environmental commitment through certification to the SFI fiber sourcing standard.”

Adds Kiepura: “We know where our fiber comes from as well as where it’s going, and our certification confirms our ability to track and document this information.

“Our SBS mill has been SFI-certified for years, and virtually all of our division’s other virgin paperboard suppliers are certified too,” says Kiepura, noting that Rock-Tenn is also an active member of several other high-profile environmental organizations, including the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and the Recycled Paperboard Alliance.
