DuPont Awards For Sustainable Packaging

This year, the competition used and independent, international jury headed by Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) director  Anne Johnson to evaluate over 120 entries using judging criteria comprising seven so-called “innovation factors: clean production; effective recovery; community/social benefit; enhanced performance; cost-effective economics; responsible sourcing; and resource and energy optimization.

Selected last spring, the Winning Breakthrough selections from the 2009 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation competition include:

  • Aveda Vintage Clove Shampoo from The Estee Lauder Companies. Marketed in the U.S., the haircare product—packaged in bottles made at a plant using 100-percent wind energy—was selected for “outstanding producer involvement and commitment to a take-back program, innovation in the use of post-consumer recycle material,” as demonstrated by the use of 96-percent recycled content bottles and 100-percent recycled-content caps;
  • Whole Foods Market’s baked goods packaged in Renew-A-Pak compostable bakeware from Biosphere Industries, a division of Sealed Air Corporation. The use of renewable, compostable trays facilitates considerable waste reduction throughout the supply chain by eliminating the need for disposable metal trays and secondary packaging for in-store sales, with consumers simply composting the dual-ovenable, microwavable trays at the products’ end-of-life;
  • Lightweight packaging from the Swedish-based Ecolean Group—enhanced aseptic packaging that cuts down package weight in half, along with achieving significant reduction in raw materials and energy usage;
  • Healthy Choice trays from ConAgra Foods, Inc. Designed and manufactured in the U.S. by Associated Packaging Technologies, the dual-ovenable frozen-food trays boast 40-percent recycled content;
  • All Day Pads in Tray and Hood Carton from Procter & Gamble (P&G). Utilized by German and U.S. retailers, the new secondary packaging for the smaller-sized feminine hygiene aids uses considerably less materials and ink—up to 80 per cent—than previous design, while maintaining strong shelf appeal for the merchandise;
  • Invisible Case Polyouters. Used by P&G in Belgium and Turkey, the lightweight alternatives to corrugated for multipacked detergent pouches has enabled 80-percent weight reduction and 20-percent volume compression to facilitate vast improvements in fuel efficiency during transport;
  • Bertolli pasta sauce pouches from Unilever. Made by Amcor Flexibles in the U.S., the microwavable pouches facilitate huge savings in transportation costs, with one truck of unfilled packages claimed to be an equivalent of 25 truckloads of unfilled glass jars;
  • Prilosec OTC Pack. Manufactured for P&G by Alcan Packaging in the U.S., the redesigned pill pack delivered significant packaging reduction, while doubling the number of pills that can be placed on a single blister-card—providing consumers the entire course of treatment on a single card;
  • he new holiday gift-boxes from the U.S.-based body-care products manufacturer Pangea Organics are attractive cartons made entirely from renewable, recyclable or biodegradable materials and use only vegetable-based inks for printing, with plantable seeds embedded inside the boxes;
  • Easy Pour barrier containers from the Australian-based A&C Packers—boasting innovative structure to replace steel drums in most common solvent applications, with the reusable 20-liter drum claimed to offer up to five-year service life—compared to one-time use.
