Sustainable Spirits: Avery Dennison Uncorks Eco-Friendly Labeling Solutions for Wine and Spirits

Company introduces 30 per cent post-consumer-waste versions of classic label stocks, while helping wineries and converters address liner-waste recycling challenges

MENTOR, OH (March 7, 2024)—Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials is highlighting new, sustainable solutions for wine labels. These include the introduction of 30 per cent PCW versions of three classic facestocks, and a new program designed to help Northern California winemakers and label converters recycle their PET liner waste.

Estate 8, Estate 17 Martele, and Bright White Felt are among the most coveted wine-label facestocks. These classics have been relied on by countless designers over the years to bring a touch of elegance and gravitas to their clients’ products. Now, as consumer trends drive the wine industry to find more sustainable packaging solutions, designers can choose 30 per cent PCW versions of these facestocks from the Avery Dennison Wine and Spirits Portfolio.

That Portfolio is increasingly a go-to source for sustainable label materials. The addition of 30 per cent PCW Estate 8, Estate 17 Martele, and Bright White Felt means the Portfolio now offers 13 facestocks with PCW content. Meanwhile, more than 95 per cent of label materials in the Portfolio now meet the Avery Dennison Sustainable ADvantage standards. To achieve these standards, a label must either be made with less raw material, enable recycling or composting, contain recycled content, or be responsibly sourced.

Avery Dennison is offering an additional solution to help increase PET liner recycling rates in Northern California. As part of its AD Circular program, Avery Dennison is offering to collect liner waste from label converters and wineries in Napa Valley and surrounding areas. Those customers can drop off their liner waste at the Avery Dennison Napa distribution center. The company will accumulate waste until reaching a full truckload—which is more economical to recycle—and then deliver it to qualified recyclers.
