End-of-Line Robotic Case Packer Automates Packaging Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics

By ESS Technologies, Inc.

June 2023, Blacksburg, VA —The ESS Model V30 Vertical Robotic Case Packer has become an industry standard in pharmaceutical and cosmetics case packing. Manufacturers turn to the Model V30 for a compact, robust solution to erect, load and seal RSC cases. In early 2023, ESS standardized the case-packer design to offer faster delivery and additional features. The enhanced V30 design includes a larger, 1,000-m-capacity case magazine for longer production runs. The magazine separates from the machine frame to simplify skidding of the finished machine for shipment. This feature allows the case packer to fit through smaller doors than case packer versions with fixed case magazines.

Based on FANUC America’s reliable M-20iD robot series, ESS designs custom robot end effectors to load almost any product, including bottles, cartons, pouches, sachets, and bundles. Quick-release features on the end effector and case packer make size changeovers virtually tool-free and fast (15 minutes or less). Standard 3M Accuglide 3 high-performance tape heads ensure consistent case sealing. A glue closure system may also be specified. The V30 includes an Allen Bradley PanelView Plus 12-inch colour-touchscreen HMI for simple operation.

State-of-the art technology includes the latest designs for servos, actuators, pneumatics, and other machine components. ESS redesigned our UL-certified electrical panel with additional overhead space to allow for future expansion. Unchanged by the standardization of the case-packer design is the V30’s compact footprint and high reliability. ESS customers still run V30 case packers manufactured more than 15 years ago with minimal service calls. When it is needed, our aftermarket support for every machine includes options for free telephone support, onsite support at ESS standard service rates, and money-saving annual service maintenance contracts.

Adding value to the V30, the machine is designed to facilitate IQ/OQ/PQ validation requirements. ESS offers an option to integrate the case packer with OEM serialization systems. Components such as inspection cameras, coders and labelers are integrated into the case packing process with automatic reject for products, cases or labels outside the parameters of the serialization system.
