New Brita public drop-off recycling program invites local businesses, organizations and community leaders to make their towns greener while fundraising for schools and charities

TORONTO, Ont. (Sept. 27, 2023) – Brita, a world leader in water filtration, has expanded its partnership with international recycling leader TerraCycle to invite Canadian businesses, neighborhood centres, schools and environmentally aware residents to become public drop-off locations to collect otherwise unrecyclable Brita water filters and packaging within their community.

As part of the Brita® Free Recycling Program, this community-led initiative allows community members, individuals, businesses and neighborhood organizations to identify themselves as public drop-off locations for neighbors to drop off their spent Brita water filters and associated packaging for free recycling and rewards. To participate, simply:

  • Visit the Brita Free Recycling Program and request to join as a public drop-off point.
  • TerraCycle will review and quickly respond to requests to join the program, and once approved, each location will be added to the public map.
  • Community members can now recycle at the established drop-off point!
  • As an added incentive, this program can directly benefit local communities through cash donations to nonprofits and local schools earned with every qualifying shipment sent to TerraCycle.

“Programs like the Brita® Free Recycling Program allows residents to work within their community and take an active role in preserving the environment, beyond what their local municipal recycling programs are able to provide,” said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “By expanding the existing recycling program to include a public drop-off option, there is now an opportunity for whole communities to collect waste alongside a national network of public drop-off locations — all with the unified goal to increase the number of recycled water filters and, ultimately, reduce their impact on landfills.”

In addition to the 13 billion single-use plastic bottles Brita customers proactively saved last year by using reusable filters, they are now able to ensure that used water filters do not contribute to already crowded landfills through participation in both the individual mail-in program, as well as the new community drop-off recycling solutions offered through TerraCycle. Once collected, the material will be recycled into new products like shipping pallets, composite decking, and outdoor furniture.
