Henkel unveils new hybrid adhesive and announces plan to acquire The Bergquist Company.

Düsseldorf, Germany—Henkel has introduced Loctite 4090, an innovative hybrid adhesive that combines the key features of structural and instant adhesives: bond strength and speed (see image above). This powerful combination provides high impact resistance, high strength bonding on a variety of substrates, and high temperature resistance, making it versatile enough to solve a wide range of design and assembly challenges.

Loctite 4090 adhesive greatly expands the capabilities of traditional adhesives and opens the door to new applications and new solutions. This is the first hybrid adhesive, it delivers the speed of a cyanoacrylate and the strength of an epoxy.

“The industry is under pressure to be more competitive, to reduce manufacturing costs and to look for new design and assembly solutions,” says Henkel vice-president of marketing general industry Mike Quail. “Loctite 4090 has been designed to reach beyond conventional industry approaches. It is the first adhesive of its kind. Never before has there been a hybrid adhesive designed to tackle the most challenging situations.”

The Loctite 4090 Hybrid Adhesive offers high quality performance in extreme environments and challenging conditions. Its features and benefits include temperature resistance up to 150°C, high impact and vibration resistance, high moisture resistance, and gap filling up to five-millimeters. It is well-suited for bonding a variety of substrates, including metals, most plastics and rubbers.

Henkel to acquire The Bergquist Company
In separate action at Henkel, it has signed an agreement to acquire The Bergquist Company, a privately-held leading supplier of thermal-management solutions for the electronics industry worldwide.

Bergquist, based in Chanhassen, MN, USA, supplies thermal-management solutions for electronic applications, serving a variety of industries ranging from automotive to consumer and industrial electronics as well as LED lighting, in N.A., Asia-Pacific and Europe. In fiscal 2013, Bergquist generated sales of around €130-million (Cdn $183.5-million). The company has about 1,000 employees and six production sites – five in the U.S. and one in China.

“With this acquisition—which is in line with our global strategy to invest in complementary leading technologies—we are strengthening our position as a global market and technology leader,” says Henkel executive vice-president of adhesive technologies Jan-Dirk Auris. “Bergquist’s track record in developing unique thermal-management solutions fits with our commitment to provide best-in-class customized solutions.”

In fiscal 2013, the Adhesive Technologies business unit generated sales of more than €8-billion (Cdn $11.3-billion), making Henkel the leading solution provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings.
Financial details were not revealed, and, of course, the acquisition is subject to approval from anti-trust authorities.
