The Press To Impress

Already employing an impressive number of flexographic printing presses, die-cutters and folder-gluers strategically located throughout the plant, the Norampac-Vaughan facility has recently competed another important capital upgrade with the installation of an imposing and towering 1228 NT Rapidset flexographic folder-gluer (FFG) manufactured by Martin, a division of the world’s leading converting technologies conglomerate Bobst Group Inc.

Consisting of a Rapidset flexographic printing press, a feeder, slotter, a rotary die-cutter, telescopic transfer, a folder-gluer and a top counter ejector, the system was installed at Norampac-Vaughan last June, recalls Bobst Canada Inc. sales manager of corrugated board products Pierre Muirsmith, in roughly half the time such a massive installation typically requires.

“Excellent service is a key factor in our success in the corrugated industry,” says Muirsmith, recalling how Bobst personnel worked around the clock in 12-hour shifts to complete the 1228 NT Rapidset installation in two weeks, rather than the initial estimate of three-and-a-half weeks.

“Unfailing service is a part of Bobst’s strong commitment to clients’ support and satisfaction,” Muirsmith reiterates. “No matter how long they’ve owned the machine, we are totally committed to handling all the retrofits, training, maintenance and spare parts replenishment for them.”

Such flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile have left Giammarco highly impressed.

“It’s service like that which that makes Bobst the foremost leader in the flexographic equipment industry,” says Giammarco, adding that the 1228 NT FFG system’s four-color printing capability provides the plant with welcome built-in operational flexibility for the future.

“The fact that most of our clients only require two colors actually works out best for us,” explains Giammarco explains.

“Whenever we have to run a single two-color job, we can actually do the set-up for a second two-color job at exactly the same time—thanks to direct access to the flexo units provided in the pits directly underneath the machine.

“It actually means minimum of downtime for us,” he points out, “which saves us both time and money.”

While such considerations played their role in selecting the 1228 NT FFG, acknowledges Giammarco, the quality of the folds achieved by the machine was also a major deciding factor.
