Automation Strathcona Paper

“Here at Strathcona,” Sklar expands, “our specialty is manufacturing superior-quality, medium- to heavyweight-caliper board for the type of applications that demand high stiffness and strength properties.”

Manufactured entirely from 100-percent recycled wastepaper fibers, the company’s five core product lines comprise:
• The heavyweight D-Cote board , featuring a double clay-coated surface with a light back liner—designed to provide superior stiffness, density, brightness and high ply-bond properties for applications requiring optimal box strength and product integrity;
• The Karicote series packaging substrate, designed and engineered as a 100-percent recycled alternative to the non-recyclable wet strength paperboard packaging substrates;
• The Strathcote series range, featuring a unique light-shaded backside that makes it a well-suited alternative to virgin white-back boards across a broad range of applications;
• The Absolutely! Food paperboard range developed specifically for direct food-contact applications, carrying all the key regulatory approvals from Health Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA);
• The recently-launched new GreenChoice 100 grade—claims to be the only 100-percent recycled substrate produced in North America that is also 100-percent “carbon neutral,” with 100 per cent of the energy used to manufacture it offset with clean renewable energy.

Calling GreenChoice 100 by far “the most eco-friendly paperboard packaging substrate in North America,” Sklar explains: “On the energy side, we purchase low-impact hydro through various independent third-parties, while making sure that 100 per cent of the carbon-dioxide emissions generated during manufacturing are offset via our tree-planting programs.”

Moreover, the superior strength properties of GreenChoice 100, adds Sklar, make it a perfect substrate for reducing the caliper (thickness) of the board and, subsequently, reducing the overall amount of packaging for a given product without compromising the product’s integrity.

And even beyond the GreenChoice 100 offset programs, Sklar relates, the mill’s long-nurtured focus on carbon-dioxide reduction and energy conservation has already resulted in 14-percent reduction for both since 2004.
