On April 21, at the PAC, Packaging Consortium headquarters in Toronto, PAC NEXT is offering a one-day workshop-based packaging design course to provide the tools and insights to deliver better packaging solutions based on taking a life cycle approach.
The Ultimate Packaging Optimization workshop is suitable for anyone working within the packaging value chain from designers, developers and decision makers to raw material suppliers, manufacturers, brand owners and retailers to waste management, re-processors and municipalities.
Course Content of Four Workshops
Session 1 – Why packaging optimization?
• The importance of packaging optimization for the total value chain (including e-commerce)
• Learnings from Extended Producer Responsibility in Canada and Europe.
• The PAC NEXT Way a set of core principles for efficient recovery of more packaging materials
Session 2 – Taking a Life Cycle Approach
• A common language – The Global Packaging Protocol for Sustainability
• An overview of Life Cycle Analysis tools
• LCA case study
Session 3 – Design for Recovery, Recycling and Waste Reduction
• What happens to packaging in a MRF (Material Recovery Facility)?
• Making package designs recyclable
• Smart packages that reduce waste (sometimes more packaging means less waste)
Session 4 – The Complete Life Cycle – Putting it all together
• Finding balance – optimization, sustainability and waste reduction
• How to set up and maintain a successful packaging optimization (and sustainability) strategy
• A toolkit to support designers, developers and decision makers
