PAC’s Just One Package Innovation Challenge

Retailers challenge the packaging industry to innovate solutions to reduce consumer reliance on single-use packages and bags at retail level.

Organized by PAC, Packaging Consortium, on May 18, 2016 retailers are via the Just One Package Innovation Challenge, challenging the packaging industry to reduce consumer reliance on single-use packages/bags at retail.

The challengers are: PAC retail members Canadian Tire, Costco, Home Depot, Sobeys, Walmart, and Wegmans.

The objective: To source sustainable solutions to eliminate waste and cost in the supply chain.

The goal: To create product design solutions or instore applications for mid to large packaged products bagged in-store for handling and transportation convenience to the car and home.

Open to all packaging industry leaders, the Just One Package Innovation Challenge will take place at the Mississauga Convention Center.

The Innovators Challenge Process
Industry Innovators are invited: To create product design solutions or instore applications for mid to large packaged products bagged in-store for handling and transportation convenience to the car and home.

Product examples: Think mid to large packaged products i.e. linens/bedding, paper products, electronics, small household appliances, sporting goods, toys, light fixtures, hardware etc.

Core Design Objectives:

  • The branding and packaging solution must appeal to consumers
;
  • The packaging solution must be environmentally friendly;
  • The packaging solution must be convenient to use;
  • Develop a flexible system that can extend to multiple product offerings;
  • Cost is an important factor.

Audience Engagement
Innovators will be given 15 minutes to present their solutions to the event attendees and a panel of retail experts for feedback. They will also have table tops for in depth discussions and full exposure to all attendees in common areas.

The audience will vote to determine the Best Of Show and 1st, 2nd and 3rd will receive recognition awards.

All audience members are rewarded:

  • Retailers – Find scalable, cost reduction, waste elimination solutions to this important environmental issue.  More than 20 possible solutions will be presented;
  • Innovators – Access to primary markets for their products. Recognition for their innovations;
  • Audience – Education, buying opportunities;
  • Students – Jobs, recognition and financial rewards.

Special Feature Student Competition:
As a special luncheon feature college and university students will present their solutions. Winners will be voted on and all students and schools will receive a small monetary award. If you are looking for new talent for your team you will definitely find them here.

Schools involved are: the University of Waterloo; Seneca College; Ryerson University; Mohawk College; Humber College; Durham College; and Conestoga College.
