New DASANI PlantBottle packaging takes gold medal.

On June 23, 2011, DASANI PlantBottle, the first‐ever fully recyclable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic beverage bottle produced using up to 30 per cent plant‐based material, took home top honours at the PAC – The Packaging Association‘s Leadership Awards.

The awards—held during the PACKEX Toronto 2011 tradeshow organized by UBM Canon—are meant to recognize outstanding packaging innovations.

This year’s breakthrough innovation was the PlantBottle packaging, developed by The Coca‐Cola Company, and was recognized in two categories: the Walmart Canada Sustainable Packaging Award, PAC’s highest honor for the Sustainable Packaging Competition; as well as Gold in the Sustainable Packaging Competition.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for an achievement that’s so close to all of our hearts,” says Nicola Kettlitz, president, Coca‐Cola Ltd. “Our goal is to make traditional plastic bottles a thing of the past, and DASANI PlantBottle packaging is a big step in the right direction.”

To date, PlantBottle packaging worldwide has eliminated the equivalent of 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide or 11 million liters of gasoline used to produce PET plastic bottles.
