Parent company of Tim Hortons and Burger King says it will purchase the Popeyes chain of restaurants for US$1.8-billion.

Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King and Tim Hortons, announced on February 21, 2017 that it wants to do a friendly purchase of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Inc., the fastfood chicken restaurant chain for US$1.8-billion.

If the purchase goes through successfully, global growth of the Popeyes brand could meet the same footprint as that Restaurant Brands International is currently mapping out with Burger King.

In 2010, Burger King added 173 new restaurants globally. In 2016, it added 735 new restaurants.

The deal requires greater than 50 percent if its shareholders to approve the takeover, with the deal expected to close by early April.
