Smurfit Kappa appoints Saverio Mayer as chief executive officer Europe.

Saverio Mayer has been appointed as Smurfit Kappa Europe chief executive officer, succeeding Roberto Villaquiran who has stepped down to pursue another opportunity.

Smurfit Kappa Group chief executive officer Tony Smurfit comments:

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Saverio Mayer as chief executive officer Europe. Saverio Mayer has been with the Group for over 30 years and was most recently the chief operating officer of our European Corrugated and Converting operations. Saverio has played a key role in the growth and development of our European business and will bring great energy and experience to the role.

“Roberto leaves Smurfit Kappa to pursue another opportunity outside of the paper-based packaging sector. He has helped the Group build and sustain its leading position in Europe and we thank him for his significant contribution to the Group in his various leadership roles. We wish him well for the future.”

Since joining the company in 1986, Saverio has held a number of commercial and operational roles. In 1996 he became head of Pan European sales before taking up the position of chief executive officer of Italy in 2001. In conjunction with his role in Italy, Saverio has also been chief executive officer of SK Russia 2007-2009, chief executive officer of SK Poland from 2007-2011 and since 2011 was responsible for the Bag-in-Box (‘BIB’) Division. In September 2015, he was appointed chief operating officer of Corrugated and Converting Europe and was responsible for the operational, sales, and financial performance of the corrugated plants and BIB.
