Scavenging Halloween with beer and candy pairings

TORONTO, Ont. (October, 2020) — For reasons beyond everybody’s control, Halloween 2020 is going to look a lot different than would be typical.

Never mind that Halloween falls on a Saturday and will be a full moon. Concerns about COVID-19 and the need to physical distance means there will be fewer Trick-or-Treaters prowling the streets, and limits on social gatherings will make Halloween parties almost non-existent.

But that doesn’t mean you still can’t celebrate in your own, COVID-respecting way.

You can still don a kickass costume, watch some horror films and snack on a big bowl of Halloween candy.

And if that is the case — or even if you are just raiding the candy you bought as you normally would, but are eating it yourself with no expectations of handing it out at the door — you can make the experience even better by experimenting with some beer and candy pairings.

If you are pouring a ….  Enjoy it with …
  • Steam Whistle Premium Pilsner
Smarties. The crisp purity of Steam Whistle’s flagship beer cuts through the sweetness of the hard candy shell and milk chocolate within.
  • Steam Whistle Session Lager
Patriotic Candy Corn. This red, white and blue variation on the Halloween staple has a raspberry lemonade flavour, a nice match with the clean and rich flavour of the Lager.
  • Steam Whistle Pale Ale
Hot Lips. The sweet and subtle heat of this cinnamon-touched candy is ideal with the hop-forward and touch of citrus found in the Pale Ale.
  • New Belgium Fat Tire
Caramels. Aromas of caramel and a toasty flavour make Fat Tire a great combo with caramel, either the soft squares you eat on their own or a chocolate bar such as Caramilk, Mars or Three Musketeers.
  • New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA
Sours. IPAs are big, strong beers and need a candy that can stand up to that. The more sour the candy, the better the match here.

If you will be encountering people, please remember to maintain physical distancing, wear a face covering (ninja costumes should be all the rage this year!) and wash your hands regularly.
