With 19 people dead from floodwaters in North Carolina thanks to Hurricane Matthew, the devastation has continued into the poultry sector, with more than 5-million chickens estimated to have been lost, according to the State’s chief environmental public official Donald van de Vaart.
The damage is also expected to affect the pits in many parts of the state where pig waste is stored, though environmental impact should be lessened, as the floodwater will dilute the waste before it is pushed into local river sources or the Atlantic Ocean.
