TORONTO—French’s Food Company says all the ketchup it sells in Canada will now be bottled in Canada.
Although all the tomatoes in French’s Ketchup sold in Canada already come from local Canadian farmers, the company was produced some of its product in the U.S..
Along with Select Food Products Ltd., French’s Food Company plans to construct a new manufacturing plant in Toronto to be fully-operational in early 2017.
French’s has also expanded its partnership with Highbury Canco Corporation of Leamington, Ont., who after taking over the former Heinz Canada plant continues to source tomatoes and further process them to produce tomato juice and tomato paste, which is used being used by French’s Canadian ketchup operation.
Highbury and French’s will work to develop and produce two new flavored ketchup varieties to be launched early 2017.
French’s brand of ketchup soared in popularity earlier this year after a consumer’s Facebook post lauded the U.S.-based company for its commitment to buy tomatoes from Canadian farmers while its competitor, Heinz, closed its Leamington plant, costing the Ontario community about 750 jobs.
French’s says it will also look to source other materials such as packaging and labels from Canadian manufacturers.
