A brief mention of company mergers and acquisitions during this week…

Here are some of the packaging industry acquisitions and moves from the past week:

Owens-Illinois, Inc. (OI) has completed the acquisition of the Vitro food and beverage glass container business from Vitro, S.A.B. de C.V. in a transaction valued at approximately US$2.15 billion. Vitro is the largest supplier of glass containers in Mexico and manufactures glass containers across multiple end uses, including food, soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits. The transaction includes Vitro’s five food and beverage glass container plants in Mexico, a plant in Bolivia and the food and beverage business of Vitro Packaging, its North American distribution business based in Plano, Texas, which together employs nearly 6,000 people.

Givaudan has announced it has acquired 100 percent of the shares of Induchem Holding AG and its subsidiaries. Induchem’s portfolio of products is based on a wide range of innovative and highly functional active ingredients with proven efficacy results, as well as research expertise in fields such as biocatalysis, metagenomics, and biochemical synthesis. Induchem primarily operates from Volketswil, Switzerland, Toulouse, France and New York, employing 65 people.

Amcor Tobacco Packaging has completed the acquisition of Souza Cruz’s internal tobacco packaging operations located in Cachoeirinha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Souza Cruz is majority-owned by British American Tobacco plc and is the market leader in the Brazilian cigarette market. The investment is supported by a long-term supply contract between Amcor and Souza Cruz and the business is expected to achieve annual sales of ~US$56 million.

Berlin Packaging, North America’s only hybrid packaging supplier, has acquired Vivid Packaging, an Ohio-based supplier of rigid packaging that does business in 25 states as well as Canada and Mexico. The transaction is Berlin Packaging’s fifth acquisition since 2010, makes the company the largest U.S. packaging supplier in its class. The acquisition strengthens Berlin Packaging’s presence in the U.S. Midwest by adding an office and warehouses in Cleveland. It also expands Berlin’s team with Vivid personnel skilled in food & beverage, personal & pet care, industrial & household chemicals, and healthcare packaging.
