A brief mention of company mergers and acquisitions during this week…

Here are some of the packaging industry acquisitions and moves from the past week:

  • Premium Brands Holdings Corp. has acquired a majority interest in Montreal, Que.-based Expresco Foods Inc., a processor of grilled protein products for the foodservice and retail markets via the West End brand. Founded in 1987, Expressco has annual sales of CDN ~$50-million. Premium Brands is a diversified specialty food company with operations in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as well as in the U.S. in Washington, Ohio and Nevada.
  • Pro Mach, Inc. has acquired Greydon, Inc., a leading manufacturer of inline printing and coding solutions for flexible packaging, expanding Pro Mach’s extensive labeling and coding product offering and complements existing capabilities in flexible packaging. Pro Mach is known worldwide for developing innovative integrated solutions by combining capabilities from its multiple brands. Pro Mach expects product integration with Greydon to be particularly valuable to customers in shared end user markets such as medical device, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, food, meat and dairy.
  • Perdue Farms is acquiring Natural Food Holdings, including the well-known Niman Ranch brand, from LNK Partners, a private equity firm.  Through the acquisition, Perdue also acquired the Prairie Grove brand and the SiouxPreme Packing plants in Sioux City and Sioux Center, Iowa. Financial terms were undisclosed. Perdue’s food brands include Perdue, Perdue Simply Smart No Antibiotics Ever, Perdue Harvestland No Antibiotics Ever, Coleman Natural and Coleman Premium No Antibiotics Ever, and Coleman Organic chicken.
  • Evonik Industries has a definitive agreement to acquire PeroxyChem Netherlands B.V., Delfzijl, from PeroxyChem Holdings, L.P. The business will increase Evonik’s hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) capacity in Europe. Evonik is a leading producer of hydrogen peroxide and its derivatives for eco-friendly oxidation and disinfection in a wide range of applications. In the application and decomposition of hydrogen peroxide the only products released are oxygen and water; this means that H2O2 is among the most eco-friendly and versatile of chemical products. Typical application fields include chlorine-free bleaching of pulp and paper and of natural fibers for white textiles. In the areas of medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foods the product is used for sterilization as well as treatment of aseptic packaging materials. Hydrogen peroxide is also used in eco-friendly treatment of waste gases and wastewater as well as for disinfection purposes.
