Cannock, England-based Mercian Labels has won the ‘Digital Label Printer of the Year 2013′ award in recognition of its achievements in the growing digital packaging marketplace.
The highly sought after Digital Printer Awards were celebrated recently at a packed celebration ceremony at the Mariott hotel at Grosvenor Square, London. Mercian’s winning entry was a suite of high quality shelf edge labels for the Wessex Mill range of premium flour products.
The labels were designed on standard label stock to maximize the benefits of digital printing for the client, including 1200dpi (dots per inch) print quality.
“Winning this award is fantastic news for us at Mercian Labels,” explains Mercian Labels managing director Dr. Adrian Steele in regards to customer Wessex Mill and its speciality flour for craft bakers. “The client has been a customer of Mercian Labels for over a decade, buying a large and increasing range of designs of shelf edge labels for their premium flour products from us manufactured using conventional flexo printing.”
Steele adds, “However, as their (Wessex Mills) market has evolved, they wanted to experiment with more varieties of flour, with lots more SKU (stock-keeping unit) color varieties and in different short run quantities whilst cutting down costs.
“By moving from flexo printing to full digital they have been able to grow their business by expanding their product range significantly, cutting out all plate costs, improving quality and reducing lead times.”
Steele says that the Wessex Mill brand also gained some added-value by increasing the number of innovative colors used in their designs, leading to an increased shelf appeal and increased sales.
