Ontario supporting over 425 jobs at Sleeman Breweries

The Province of Ontario is partnering with Sleeman Breweries Ltd. to help the company create 15 new jobs and retain 412 existing positions in Guelph.
Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Minister Responsible for Small Business, and Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph, made the announcement on March 13, 2018 at Sleeman Breweries in Guelph, Ont.
Sleeman Breweries is Canada’s third-largest brewing operation and is one of Ontario’s original craft brewers. More than 20 different brands are brewed year-round in Guelph, including the Sleeman brand family of premium lagers and ales.
With support from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, the company is investing in expanding its packaging capabilities and is investing in equipment upgrades and new beer tanks.
“Our government’s strategic partnership with Sleeman Breweries is one of the ways we are helping to grow Ontario’s leading food and beverage sector. Our investments through the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund are creating good jobs here in Guelph, strengthening the economy, and helping local producers keep pace in a rapidly expanding marketplace,” says Leal.
This investment will enable the company to brew and package beer that’s currently produced by a contractor in the U.S. It will also allow the company to implement innovative can packaging technology and to produce 710ml aluminum cans of select brands for the Canadian market.
Supporting business investment in southwest Ontario is part of Ontario’s plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change.
The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.
Says Sleeman Breweries founder and chairman John Sleeman: “Our company’s history in Ontario dates back to 1834 and we have always been proud to offer premium quality products to our customers. This funding will support our capacity to create jobs as well as drive exports and innovation on our brands to ensure continued growth and a vibrant, sustainable future for years to come.”
