GS1 partners with healthcare standards organization

General GS1 Health Terminology Standards Development OrganizationGlobal standards agency GS1 has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO) that will see the two organizations collaborate and ensure compatibility between their respective standards systems, where appropriate.
The two organizations will also work together to promote adoption of the use of GS1 standards and Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT).
GS1 and IHTSDO are both members of the Joint Initiative Council, an umbrella organization for standards development organizations.
The partnership is meant to improve the precision of healthcare supply chains, according to Miguel Lopera, president and CEO of GS1’s global office.
“GS1’s global standards for automatic identification (through barcodes and radio frequency identification), traceability and data synchronization, provide the opportunity to make the healthcare supply chain more efficient and accurate, and thus safer,” he said.
“This partnership with IHTSDO will accelerate the development and adoption of global standards for sharing information among our stakeholders.”
